  1. MAKE A BACK UP COPY OF THIS DISK, BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE.
  2. If you are upgrading from a previous version of LAN-LINK, the 2.10 SYS files
  3. are NOT compatible with earlier ones. Copy ALL your current LAN-LINK files to
  4. a floppy disk and run the SETUPLL.BAT file on this disk as instructed below.
  5. Place the floppy disk in Drive A: Type 'A:' (without the '') followed by the
  6. 'Enter' key so that you see the A:> prompt. The floppy disk contains a batch
  7. file which will set up the correct subdirectories on your hard disk. Type
  8. 'SETUPLL', touch the 'Enter' key, and the batch file will go to work.
  9.  
  10. The Install program customizes the most often used parameters for you. Section
  11. 18 of Appendix 2 describes each of the parameters. Read it as you install LAN-
  12. LINK. Install first asks you for the TNC you are using, reply with the number
  13. associated with your TNC. If you don't find your TNC listed, try the TNC2
  14. option.

  16. If you have not already connected to your local BBS, skip the following
  17. parameters, and re-run install at some later time when you know which answers
  18. to reply with.
  19.  
  20. BBS Mail Trigger:      Text in the mail beacon from your local BBS.
  21. Read Request:          Command you send to the BBS to read a message.
  22. Bulletin Read Request: Command you send to the BBS to read a bulletin.
  23. BBS Subject String:    BBS prompt for the subject of a message you are sending.
  24. BBS Message String:    BBS prompt for the text of a message you are sending.

  26. When you have completed the installation sequence, copy your old logbook files
  27. (HF.DBF and VHF.DBF) from the back-up floppy disk into the LAN-LINK directory.

  29. Bringing LAN-LINK Up the First Time.
  30. 1 Turn on the TNC.
  31. 2 If the date and time in the PC are not set to UTC (GMT), set them using the
  32.   DOS date and time commands.
  33. 3 Load the program by typing LAN-LINK in the way you normally load a program.
  34. 4 WAIT until the program says it has initialized the TNC and shows the band
  35.   and power in the status window at the top of the screen.
  36. 5 If there is no battery in your TNC do what the TNC manual tells you to do to
  37.   synchronize the TERMINAL baud rate to 1200 baud.
  38. 6 After LAN-LINK has loaded, use the Parameters Menu to change anything you
  39.   still need to customize. Use the "U" option to save the updated file. After
  40.   reading the rest of the manual, you may want to change other defaults to set
  41.   up LAN-LINK the way you like it.
  42. 8 Exit from LAN-LINK by using the Alt-X Key or the Esc Key followed by the X
  43.   Key.
  44. 9 Reload LAN-LINK the same way you did before. This will load the edited
  45.   LAN-LINK.SYS file with the new settings. You are now ready to use LAN-LINK.
  46.   If this is your first time, try the Quick Menu. Use 0 option in the
  47.   Parameter Menu to set Band and Power BEFORE you log your first QSO.

  51. If you have batteries in the TNC, make sure the TNC is set for a terminal baud
  52. rate of 1200, and try to run the program. If you see Greek characters or it
  53. doesn't work, remove the batteries and try again (Refer to Appendix 1.10). You
  54. can then replace the batteries and from then on the program will be correct.
  55.  
  56. Make sure you leave the TNC on when you replace the batteries or your
  57. initialization will revert to the TNC default settings - the batteries are
  58. there to power the TNC RAM while your primary power is off.
  59.  
  60. If you have trouble with a PK232MBX, then, with LAN-LINK running, turn the
  61. PK232MBX off, count to ten and turn it on again. Type one * character. If that
  62. fails, repeat this a few times. If it still fails, open the PK232 and remove
  63. the battery jumper. count to 10 slowly before replacing it and try again.

  65. IF you are using a computer with two floppy disk drives and no hard disk,
  66. then perform the install functions by hand. The documentation file has been
  67. cut into two because it is too big to fit on a 360k floppy disk.

  69. IF you don't feel like printing out the manual, you can obtain a printed
  70. manual. A printed manual is available as part of my book "Basic Packet Radio".

  72. LAN-LINK remembers the band and power information in the logbook. If you want
  73. that display to work, put at least one entry both in the HF and VHF logbooks.
